Career Biography Seán joined the Department in August 2007 having previously taught at the National University of Ireland Maynooth and at Queen’s University Belfast. Seán has worked as a researcher at the Northern Ireland Assembly and at the Centre for International Border Research (CIBR) at Queen’s University Belfast where he is Honorary Research Fellow.
Research and Publications Seán’s main research interests are in nationalism, religion, and borders—particularly as they concern the shifting and variable configuration of the modern state. His current research focuses upon sub-state nationalist projects in Spain and Britain, while he is also working on a reconceptualisation of religion as a form of rule and government. Seán is in the process of co-editing a Special Issue of the Journal of Borderlands Studies (with Prof. Liam O’Dowd of Queen’s University Belfast), while recent articles on religion and politics are appearing in the Archives européennes de sociologie and the Journal of Historical Sociology.
Teaching Seán contributes to team-taught modules from Level 1 through to Masters Level.
Supervision Seán would be interested in supervising research in any of the above fields, and would consider supervising research on social movements, globalisation, and comparative politics.
